Jamaica Scorpions fancy chance of glory in Super50
Jamaica Scorpions Vice-captain Derval Green says the team has a fighting chance of winning the Regional Super50 cricket tournament.
“The preparation has been good; I think we have ticked all of the boxes,” the all-rounder told the Jamaica Observer yesterday at the end of a practice match between Rovman Powell’s XI and John Campbell’s XI at Sabina Park.
“The guys are upbeat and ready for our first game on Thursday against Barbados Pride. We are happy about where we are and what we are looking to accomplish at this tournament. I think we can win it,” he said.
The team, coached by Andre Coley and captained by Powell, is set to depart the island for St Kitts on Monday.
Wicketkepeer/batsman Denis Smith made good use of yesterday’s final practice outing to crack an even hundred for Campbell’s XI in a contest that ended in a no-result due to bad light.
The Grenadian-born Smith, the nephew of former West Indies opening batsman Devon Smith, crashed 10 fours and four sixes from 93 balls in his team’s 246-7.
Scores: Campbell’s XI 246-7 (50 overs); Powell’s XI 217-7 (40 overs).
Left-hander Campbell, not a part of the Scorpions squad due to upcoming West Indies duty, supported with 54.
Jamaica Defence Force pacer Andre Dennis, also not included in the squad, was the top bowler for Powell’s XI, claiming 4-39.
Marquino Mindley, fellow pacer Nicholson Gordon and off-spinner Jamie Merchant all took a wicket.
An opening partnership of 90 runs between Guyanese-born left-hander Assad Fudadin, who top scored with 64, and Aldaine Thomas (30) set the table for Powell’s XI as they chased 247 for victory.
But a steady fall of middle-order wickets — including those of Powell (40) and Bonner (36) — dented their run chase.
The 17-year-old leg spinner Matthew Comerie, invited to rub shoulders with the seniors, impressed with 3-36 for Campbell’s XI. Medium pacer Alwyn Williams grabbed 2-10.
