Lakeland Farms Limited – home of three time champion stallion

The Supreme Racing Guide continues its series of articles featuring some of the stud farms operating in Jamaica before the annual Yearling Sale.

The Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association’s Yearling Sale is to be conducted on Sunday next (November 10) at the official car park at Caymanas Park.

The featured farm today is Lakeland Farms Limited.

HISTORY

Lakeland Farms Limited has been in operation for over 25 years. The stud farm is located on Port Henderson Road in St Catherine near to three other such farms.

HORSE INVENTORY

Two stallions – Storm Craft and Hedge Fund. There are 28 resident mares on the farm.

THE STALLIONS

Hedge Fund (Super Saver – Rosy Humor by Distorted Humor)

Winner of three races in the United States with one second -place finish and one third -place finish from nine starts with earnings of US$379,060. Hedge Fund wins were on February 4, 2017 at Gulfstream Park in a maiden special weight event; on February 11, 2018 at Gulfstream Park in an Allowance Optional Claiming event and on March 17, 2018 at Oaklawn Park in the Essex Handicap (Listed) Stakes race. Hedge Fund’s other notable runs were a third place finish in the Sunland Derby at Sunland on March 26, 2017 and a second-place finish in the Illinois Derby on April 22, 2017 at Hawthorne. Hedge Fund’s sire Super Saver was a winner of three races from 10 starts with earnings of US$1,889,766. Super Saver wins included the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes on November 28, 2009 at Churchhill Downs and the Kentucky Derby on May 1, 2010 also at Churchhill Downs.

Storm Craft (Forest Wildcat – Crafty Ember by Crafty Prospector)

Three-time champion sire in Jamaica and current leader, Storm Craft was a winner of 12 races in the United States with 12 second-place finishes and one third from 61 starts with earnings of US$402,003. Storm Craft raced at tracks including Aqueduct, Belmont Park, Saratoga, Charles Town and Philadelphia Park. His sire Forest Wildcat raced 20 times holding nine wins, two seconds and a third with earnings of US$478,862; wins included the Phoenix Breeders Cup’ at Keenland on November 13, 1996 and the Finger Lakes Breeders’ Cup at Finger Lakes on August 4, 1996. Storm Craft’s dam Crafty Ember won 10 races with seven seconds and six thirds from 39 starts with earnings of US$133,835.

MARES

Two of the top mares at Lakeland are Passion and My Heartbeat. Passion the line of Juice Man – winner of the recent Trinidad and Tobago Derby, while My Heartbeat is the dam of Corazon, the 2018 champion two-year-old filly.
