Kristof Street won three gold and one silver medal to be crowned champion at the Jamaica Rifle Association’s (JRA) Beginners Archery Tournament held at the JRA’s headquarters in Kingston on Sunday.

The all debutante competition was shot over six stages with over 20 first-time contestants in contention for the title.

Street, who shot a perfect round on the final stage of the competition, won three stages and placed second in another to score 415 points overall and distanced himself from the field. Marjaan Medley, who won one of the six stages and who placed second in another, amassed 360 points to take second, while Kirk Henderson, who was second in two stages, placed third with 345 points.

Reflecting on his impressive debut, Street said: “It’s pretty gratifying to win my first tournament and also to have shot a perfect round on the final stage, which was a hard round for everybody, but I managed to stay focused… once I got the first shot in, I knew I just had to do the same thing over and over and it worked out.”

The JRA’s archery team Captain Norman Chen said both Street’s breakout performance and the overall standard of the competition were impressive.

“On a whole, the performance was excellent. Jamaica is great at many sports and we want archery to be on that list as well, so myself and Coach Page Brown are trying to introduce it to new competitors and we were really encouraged by the scores we saw from our beginners at this tournament,” he said.

He added: “Kristof had a particularly good competition, he is showing great promise for the future and now as we’re looking to build a national team to represent Jamaica internationally, seeing a new archer doing so well is very encouraging.”
