Wolmer’s, Immaculate claim Barita U-19 tennis titles

WOLMER’S Boys’ and Immaculate Conception captured the respective Boys and Girls Under-19 team titles at the 2019 Barita-sponsored All-Island High Schools Team Tennis Championships which ended on Saturday.

The three-day event was held at Eric Bell Tennis Centre.

The Heroes’ Circle-based Wolmer’s coached by David Sanguinetti was winning the Boys Under-19 team title for a fifth consecutive year. They defeated Hillel Academy 4-2 in the final.

Immaculate, coached by Arthur Phillpotts, defeated Hillel Academy 4-1 in the girls’ final. Immaculate were winning the Girls Under-19 team title for a 17th time.

In the Boys Under-19 team final, Damani Cain, the top player for Wolmer’s gave his team an early lead by crushing Gabriel Azar 6-0.

However, in the second singles match, John Azar also made easy work of his opponent Ryan Muir with a 6-2 win to level the tie at 1-1.

Ryan Cox gave Hillel a 2-1 lead in the third singles by defeating Mario Campbell 6-2. Joshua Graveney levelled the tie at 2-2 for Wolmer’s after beating Blake Shoucair 6-2 in the fourth singles match.

The three doubles matches were to determine the winners of the tie. The Hillel pair conceded the first doubles to the Wolmer’s pair of Cain and Muir 6-0. Wolmer’s then clinched the team contest 4-2 when Campbell and Graveney beat John and Gabriel Azar 6-2.

In the semi-finals played last Friday, Wolmer’s knocked out Ardenne High, while Hillel knocked out Jamaica College.

In the Girls Under-19 team final, Immaculate Conception easily brushed aside Hillel Academy. Annchal Khemlani won the first singles with an easy 6-1 win against Kimberley Fearon. They went up 2-0 in the second singles with Layna Johnson beating Nicole Mair 6-2.

Mia Wong made it 3-0 for Immaculate with a 6-1 win over Peta-Gaye Graham before Moesha Fox of Hillel halted their streak when she won the fourth singles, beating Gizelle Sang 6-1. Hillel did not field a pair for the first doubles match to give Immaculate a 4-1 victory.

The Girls Under-19 championship featured only three schools and was contested via a round-robin format. The other participating team was Ardenne High who lost both their ties to Immaculate and Hillel.

Campion College squeezed out a thrilling 3-2 win over newcomers North Gate High from St Ann to capture the Under-16 Boys team title.

Montego Bay High tagged Immaculate Conception 3-1 to win the Girls Under-16 team title.

Campion College defeated Wolmer’s 2-0 in the final to win the Boys Under-14 team title.

Immaculate Conception captured the Girls Under-14 team title by defeating the American International School of Kingston (AISK).

The most disciplined awards went to Julia Madden from Immaculate Conception for the girls’ section, while Jardian Gibbs from North Gate High took the honours for the boys.
