As security concerns mount at the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona campus, its student-led arm, the Guild of Students has embarked on a partnership with the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), to alleviate concerns about safety at the institution.

The partnership comes in light of recent incidents that have been plaguing the campus, where several students -mostly females- are being targeted by individuals who disguise themselves as taxi operators.

The range of incidents elicited a firestorm from students who are adamant that the University identify effective ways to mitigate the ongoing security crisis.

President of the Guild Council, Christina Williams, says the Council is working in tandem with the office of the Director of Security who is soliciting the assistance of the JCF.

“We will continue to advocate for consistency in these improvements. We are currently working on engaging the JCF to help us secure the campus as well as in the vicinity,” she told BUZZ.

While a precise timeline was not indicated,

the operations are scheduled to be underway soon. The police officers will be

placed at the UWI main back gate to safeguard students. They are to also patrol

the campus between the hours of 5pm to 10pm.

An arm of the top university in the world is found here as well as the top

national university on technology,” she said.

“If we do not secure our students and staff, we are not only compromising their lives; you are compromising the literal development of our nation. Vision 2030 that we love to tout, will not be achieved,” Williams added.

“Who will leave university to work, do

business and raise families?” she questioned.

In the past month, there have been more than five reported cases of robberies on and off the campus.
