Prime Minister Andrew Holness announced recently that several initiatives will be undertaken to reduce the chaos and indiscipline on the roads and in public spaces. This should be welcomed and supported by all Jamaicans.

When we create a culture of order and discipline it becomes integrated in how we live, work, play and generally how we relate to each other. This is not a political issue, but a social one, which has significant benefits and could lead to economic growth and development, investments and a better society.

Such initiatives, if properly implemented and enforced, could help to reduce crime and road fatalities.

The prime minister said: “I want the taxi men and road users as well to appreciate that there can be no prosperity in chaos and disorder.” Strict enforcement of rules, according to the prime minister, is coming, including parking, use of cellular and other devices while driving, overhaul of the ticketing system where offenders rack up hundreds or thousands of tickets before being brought before the courts. Street vending should also be monitored, with designated and accessible areas for these activities, even a designated strip on part of a road creates more order.

The prime minister made the announcements at the recent Jamaica Labour Party annual conference and he explained that the introduction of smart technology, including cameras at traffic lights, and using the law to prosecute based on digital evidence is also coming. This is long overdue. Such initiatives should be complemented with adequate public relations to educate the public to allow them to be more understanding, responsive and cooperative.

There are significant benefits of having a more orderly and disciplined society and keeping cities clean and green. Let us support the prime minister and hold him to his words, as culture does drive change and affect how we think, act, and behave.
