Getting stronger after 125 years
MANDEVILLE, Manchester — The Albion Primary School is this year celebrating its 125 Quasquicentennial (125th) anniversary under the theme, ‘Come Home: Ignite, Enrich, Inspire.’
The school is one of Jamaica’s oldest — having been around from long before it was formally recognised by the Government in 1894.
School leaders boast that it has produced a number of very influential and successful people and enjoys good ratings by the Ministry of Education.
The school building itself has had a number of changes and additions over the years, but it is in need of repair and the principal and other members of the school board are advocating for a new building.
Their plan is to build on donated land close to the school.
The land, according to a member of the Albion Primary School board member Vivien Morris-Brown was given to the school by bauxite company Alcan Jamaica Ltd in the 1960s.
At a recent banquet to celebrate the school’s anniversary, Member of Parliament for Manchester Central, Peter Bunting pledged to play his part in lobbying for renewal and improvement at Albion Primary.
Morris-Brown is confident that the school will also get the support of its past students for a new building.
Anniversary celebrations kicked off in November with a church service at the Ebenezer United Church, continued with a homecoming sports/ fun day on the school grounds and ended with a ‘bang’ in the form of the banquet at the Ridgemount United church hall.
