KINGSTON, Jamaica — Jamaica has recorded 12 deaths due to COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, the highest number of deaths in one day since the first case of the virus was confirmed locally in March 2020.

The country’s case count also inched closer to 30,000 yesterday, with 695 new cases.

This pushes the total confirmed deaths to 475 and the total confirmed cases of the virus since the outbreak in the island to 28, 968.

The latest deaths include two females, ages 54 and 37, and two males, ages 79 and 33, from St James; three males, ages 75, 77 and 87, and a 76-year-old female from St Elizabeth; a 62-year-old male from Kingston and St Andrew; a 48-year-old male from St Catherine; a 67-year-old male from St Ann; and a 73-year-old male from Westmoreland.

Another death was also reported as coincidental and one more was reported under investigation.

Meanwhile, the ministry said of the new cases reported, 409 are females and 286 are males with ages ranging from four days to 91 years.

The parish with the highest number of cases yesterday is Kingston and St Andrew, which had 202 cases, followed by St Catherine with 183 new infections. The other cases were reported in St James (63), Westmoreland (43), Manchester (41), St Elizabeth (37), St Thomas (36), St Ann (28), Clarendon (23), Trelawny (21), Hanover (13), St Mary (three), and Portland (two).

The ministry also reported 137 more recoveries, pushing the total recoveries to 14,781.
