Mullings throws PB to win Under 20 boys’ discus throw
KINGSTON – Ralford Mullings threw a big personal best 66.61m to win the Under 20 boys’ discus throw on Friday’s second day of the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) Ministry of Health/Supreme Ventures National Junior Championships at the national stadium.
The Kingston College ISSA Boys Champs Class 1 champion improved on his previous best of 63.69m and moved up from fourth place to second in the World Under 20 rankings.
It was the second best throw ever by a Jamaica behind national junior record holder Traves Smikle and ninth best all time in that age group.
Four throwers have achieved the World Under 20 qualifying mark of 57.00m with Edwin Allen’s Trevor Gunzell, who has a personal best 60.62m, taking second Friday with 58.57m. Jamaica College’s Shamar Reid threw a personal best 57.94 for third and Edwin Allen’s Christopher Young took fourth with a personal best 57.84m.
Clarendon College’s Ricardo Hayles won the Under 18 boys event with 53.86m, beating the Jamaica College pair of Zachry Campbell- 49.31m and Delangelo Jackson- 47.82m.
Camperdown twins Britannia Johnson and Britannie were first and second in the Under 18 girls shot put with 14.55m and 14.25m respectively.
Edwin Allen’s Rochelle Salmon was third with 14.12m.
St Jago High’s Kayla Davis-Edwards completed the Under 20 girls discus throw/shot put double, winning the latter Friday with 12.95m, beating Alpha Academy’s Jheanelle Gordon, who was second in 12.43m and Wolmers Girls’ Aaliyah Whyte, who was third with 12.26m.
Calabar High’s Odayne Harris won the Under 20 boys javelin throw with 61.04m, with St Jago High’s Andre Raymond second with 55.80m and Kingston College’s Chevaughn Fletcher third also with 50.80m.
