Tommy G eyes success
ON-THE-RISE producer Tommy G felt a career in music was inevitable.
“My father is Vincent Gordon. He played trombone for the Skatalites. His talent can be heard on songs by BB Seaton, The Heptones, Bob Andy, and on Bob Marley’s albums Kaya and Exodus,” Tommy G told the Jamaica Observer.
Tommy G (real name Timothy Gordon) said after meeting his father during his early teenage years, his interest in music was piqued.
“Bonding with my dad drew me closer to music, and that’s when I decided I really wanted to pursue music as a career,” he shared.
Tommy G’s production Never Go Win, by rising dancehall artiste I-Voltage and Mavado, has been a game-changer for the producer since its release on April 30. So far, it has racked up more than 1.8 million views on YouTube.
“I am surprised and happy for the support that everyone has given the song. I personally know I-Voltage and I wanted to see him win. His fans wanted to see him win as well. If I could sit down and personally thank those supporters, I would,” said Tommy G.
His association with I-Voltage has been a long-standing one. They first collaborated on the song One Way in 2016.
“Every time we do a project its always something special and the reception is always good. Furthermore, I love working with this artiste because he’s a very mature artiste and very respectful at the same time,” he said.
Tommy G is hoping to score similar success with his forthcoming project titled Bull Bay Riddim. The project takes its name from the east Kingston community in which the producer grew up. It is scheduled for release in July and is to feature songs by Rassi, I-Voltage and Mavado, Kratos, Kirkis, Kyda, Kaepable, Lanz and Kadrary.
“My productions have a lot of chord movements followed by vocal chops with good catchy melodies or phrases. I believe that there are two things that drive a beat home — the music or the drum sequencing. Sometimes I tend to have both, while sometimes I choose between one to not overcomplicate anything and to leave space for the artistes to express themselves comfortably,” Tommy G explained.
Tommy G is currently producing a seven-track EP for I-Voltage titled Dirt Road, also expected to be released next month.
“I want to leave an impact in music each time I release a song. I don’t want to release a song that lasts for a moment, but for a lifetime. I want to also give other young talents the platform to show and express themselves musically,” said Tommy G.
