Barbadian Spencer bags long jump bronze
AREN Spencer has taken delight in winning a bronze medal for Barbados in the Under-20 Boys’ long jump competition at the 49th staging of the Carifta Games at the National Stadium.
Competing against a quality field in the morning session on day two, Spencer had a best of 7.48m on his fourth attempt which earned him a spot on the podium alongside winner Jaydon Hibbert of Jamaica (7.62m) and Uroy Ryan of St Vincent and the Grenadines (7.52m).
For Spencer, a place on the podium was exactly what he had wished for.
“I was hoping to achieve just that. Obviously, I knew what I was getting myself into. I knew that the competition would be really fierce and I am really, really happy that I was a part of the top three and that I am a part of that elite long jump group. So, I am very, very happy,” he said.
He is enjoying the Jamaican experience and is also calling on his previous Carifta Games experiences to help him cope with the demands in 2022.
“It’s been a pretty good experience. I have been here before. This is my second year at the Carifta Games so I have taken that experience and I have used it to my advantage.”
Spencer has two more events to compete in at the games and he is hoping for more medals, even as he is likely to face more of the same competitors on Monday.
“I have the triple jump and the 4x400m. It will be the same competition but I am confident and, obviously, I have that little boost from getting that medal in the long jump.
“I am going to get back to my room, get back to the drawing board, and refocus for the triple jump,” he said.
Both the triple jump and 4x400m will feature on the final day of competition on Monday.
