Must-win encounter for Arsenal, Manchester United

Must-win encounter for Arsenal, Manchester United

The two best teams in Germany, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund, will clash in their der Klassiker derby on Saturday (April 23) in a potentially explosive encounter. Prior to that clash, Arsenal and Manchester United will go head to head in a must-win game for both sides if they are to maintain their hopes of a top-four finish.

Event # 1 – EPL, Arsenal vs Manchester United

It seems like each week is always a pivotal time in the race for the Premier League top-four finish and in fairness this week is absolutely no different, as Arsenal welcome Manchester United. Arsenal will enter this vital clash off the back of a three-match losing streak and have significantly dropped off the pace for the fourth place in the standing. The Gunners, Arsenal, are going through challenging times but their win against Chelsea two days ago have brought back live to the Gunners. A win against Manchester United could put them right back in the race for a top-four place, but that’s easier said than done.

Manchester United will be aiming to return to winning ways after they were embarrassed 4-0 by their hated rivals Liverpool in midweek, a result that has left them sixth in the table, three points behind fourth-placed Tottenham, who have a game in hand. Worryingly for United, they have back-to-back matches against Arsenal and Chelsea, and the results from these two matches could determine whether they are in the top four race heading into the final four matches of the season.

KEY STATS

Arsenal – have won just three of their 15 Premier League games against Manchester United on Saturdays (D5 L7) and are winless in seven since a 2-1 home win in November 2008. However, two of the Gunners’ three such victories against the Red Devils have been in an early kick-off slot (11:15 in March 1998, 12:45 in November 2008).

Manchester United – won the reverse fixture 3-2 against Arsenal in December, ending a six-game winless run against the Gunners in the Premier League. They’re looking to complete their first league double over Arsenal since 2017-18.

Both sides – Arsenal are unbeaten in their last three Premier League home games against Man Utd (W2 D1), keeping a clean sheet each time – they’ve never kept a clean sheet in four consecutive home league games against the Red Devils.

The betting tip. Draw.

Event # 2 GER – Bayern Munich vs Dortmund

Bayern Munich welcome rival Borussia Dortmund to the Allianz Arena tomorrow Saturday, April 23, for what promises to be a highly entertaining match at the top of the table.

Bayern will enter this match nine points ahead of Dortmund, and even a draw would give Bayern the title as their vastly superior goal difference over Dortmund would come into play if both sides ended the season with the same number of points. Bayern enter this match after a comfortable 3-0 beating of Armenia Bielefeld at the weekend as they rebounded from crashing out of the Champions League quarterfinals. Bayern are unbeaten in their last eight Bundesliga matches, winning their last four while scoring 12 times. At home, their form is more frightening as they have won 12 of their 15 matches played so far while scoring a whopping 43 goals.

This is a fixture that Dortmund must dread. They have lost the last seven league visits to Bayern, scoring just five times, and conceding a whopping 30 goals. The last six visits to the Allianz Arena have seen them concede at least four goals. With that said, Dortmund have to win this match to retain their faint hopes of winning the Bundesliga title, but a second-place finish seems more likely as they are nine points ahead off the third-placed RB Leipzig with four matches remaining in the season. Dortmund are unbeaten in their last seven away matches and are in good scoring form much like Bayern – they hammered Wolfsburg 6-1 at home at the weekend to enter this match high on confidence.

KEY STATS

Bayern Munich – could win their 10th Bundesliga title in a row, as they currently have a nine-point lead over Borussia Dortmund with three games remaining after their match against Borussia Dortmund. Ten straight league titles would be a new record in Europe’s big five leagues (Juventus also 9 from 2012 to 2020).

Dortmund – in the 6-1 win over Wolfsburg, Dortmund’s Erling Haaland collected three goal involvements in a Bundesliga match (2 goals, 1 assist) for the first time since September 2021. He scored twice (at least) for the seventh time in this Bundesliga season, a tally surpassed by only Bayern’s Robert Lewandowski (9 times).

Both sides – FC Bayern have won each of their last seven competitive games against Borussia Dortmund — the longest-winning streak in this fixture. Only against Hamburger SV have BVB suffered a longer losing streak in their history (a run of 8 between 1982-1985).

The betting tip. Bayern win.
