You don’t have to ask that I and all my sisters are rooting for Kamina Johnson Smith to land the position of Commonwealth secretary general, for which she launched her formal candidature yesterday. We have no doubt that she will make a wonderful secretary general and represent us on the Rock very well. She continues to make her dad, Ambassador Anthony Johnson, proud.

The Jamaica Observer mentioned another outstanding sister, Maroon Queen Gloria Simms, for her courageous apology on behalf of the Maroons. But they did not mention that among her other accolades, she was made a Gamaang in Suriname, that country’s highest Maroon honour, and is the first woman to be so designated. All well-thinking sisters salute her. There is just something about our Jamaica women. Still, watch out for the inevitable naysayers.

Hard to believe but the novel coronavirus pandemic is becoming less and less of a barrier to travel for many Americans, according to the latest Longwoods International tracking study of US travellers. The study says the COVID-19 cases across that country are not deterring Americans’ travel planning in 2022 as only one in five or 19 per cent of travellers have indicated that the virus will “greatly impact” their travel decisions in the next six months. Surging prices at the pump are said to have led travellers to choose destinations closer to home and even reduce the number of trips they are taking.

The people demonstrating in white against recent security forces action in Denham Town remind me of those who marched in white for Dudus in 2010. Is there an organised protest movement there?
