Reggae Boy Antonio scores but Hammers lose Europa League first leg of semis
LONDON, England (CMC) — Reggae Boy Michail Antonio netted his 11th goal of the season for English Premier League club West Ham United, but it was not enough to gain parity as they went down 2-1 against Eintracht Frankfurt in their Europa League semi-final first-leg on Thursday night.
The Hammers will now have to come from behind in Germany next week if they are to reach their first European final in 46 years — and 32-year-old striker Antonio is convinced they will.
“It probably wasn’t our best performance, but one thing we like about this tournament is that it’s two legs,” Antonio said afterwards.
“We’ve been in this situation before with Sevilla. We need to go there, put in the work, and you never know.
“It was a slow start, 1-0 down, but we got control of the game and created quite a few chances. It’s still all to play for; it’s not over. This week we haven’t done it, but next week we will.”
Jarrod Bowen almost grabbed a draw for the hosts in stoppage time at London Stadium but his overhead kick from a Declan Rice cross bounced down off the crossbar.
The visitors stunned the home side when Ansgar Knauff scored inside the first minute.
The Hammers recovered, however, through Antonio’s first goal in the Europa League since September as he stretched in front of Rice to force home Kurt Zouma’s nod-down at the far post following a terrific set piece.
But Frankfurt got the winner when Daichi Kamada tapped home after Djibril Sow’s low shot was turned into his path on 54 minutes.
“I’ve been very frustrated at myself for not scoring goals. People have been saying, ‘you’re playing well, don’t worry’, but goals are what I’m playing for. I’m now a striker and that’s what people want from me,” Antonio continued.
“The overriding feeling after the game is that we’re in it to win it. Another game to go, we’re gonna win it, and we’re gonna win everything.”
Scottish side Rangers — missing their top scorers, Colombian Alfredo Morelos and Reggae Boy Kemar Roofe, through injury — also lost their Europa League semi-final first leg, going down 1-0 away to another German side, RB Leipzig, from Spaniard Angelino’s fine volley five minutes from time.
