Masked group does ‘Diamonds’ tribute
MASKED reggae group, Shubs World Party, has released Mighty Diamonds in the Sky, a single paying tribute to fallen members of legendary trio The Mighty Diamonds.
The group members, who often don a stage disguise, felt the loss suffered by Jamaica when Donald “Tabby” Shaw was brutally slain in a drive-by shooting in April, shortly followed by the death of the ailing Fitzroy “Bunny”’ Simpson four days later. Both members of The Mighty Diamonds were buried during separate funerals.
“One of Shubs World Party members intimated that the murder of Tabby hit him hard as he knew Shaw personally, so we recorded the single,” said Roger Grant, the group’s manager.
The single distributed by VP Records, a subsidiary VPAL Music, came out on May 20 produced on the 619 Entertainment Group label and is the fifth song for the fledgling group. It is an interpolated version of Rihanna’s Shine Bright Like a Diamond.
Manager Roger Grant said the masked look is inspired by many great groups in the rock genre such as Kiss who “had a great image backed up by great music”.
“I believe the reggae industry needs something equivalent. Some may regard this as a gimmick but the music over time will prove how serious they are,” said Grant.
The group had previously released the anti-war effort, The Putin Song.
“They also have just finished shooting a music video for another single Love Song, a cover of an original from British new wave icons The Cure,” said Grant.
