J’can swimmers battle on day three to cop four medals
DESPITE finding the going a bit tough on day three of the Pan Am Aquatics Age Group Championships, Jamaica’s young sensations continued to battle hard, copping three silver and one bronze to take their medal count to 12 heading into today’s final day of action in Trinidad and Tobago.
Christanya Shirley again led Jamaica’s medal hunt on Saturday’s penultimate day of the four-day championships, winning two silver to go with her two gold and another silver won on Thursday’s opening day.
Jamaica’s tally now reads three gold, six silver and three bronze medals, and expectations are high this will improve as they seek to leave the twin-island republic on a high.
Shirley continued her rich form to again get the ball rolling in the girls’ 13-14 100m breaststroke. She stopped the clock at 1:19.98, behind Puerto Rico’s Victoria Matinez Vazques (1:18.79) with Guatemala’s Alejandra Alvarado (1:20.92) in third.
Kabiki Thomas added a silver to his bronze medal, placing second in the boys’ 13-14 event in 1:12.45. Puerto Rico’s Jorell Figueroa won the event in 1:07.58 while Anpherne Bernard (1:12.53) of Trinidad and Tobago was third.
Shirley copped her second silver of the day in the girls’ 13-14 50m butterfly, stopping the clock in 29.26s. Yasmin Contreras of Peru topped the event in 29.16s, with Alexandra Penagos (30.26s) of Colombia third.
Leanna Wainwright added to her backstroke silver and, by extension, Jamaica’s tally, placing third in the girls’ 15-17 50m butterfly in 30.69s. She was behind the Peru pair of Alexia Acuna (28.22s) and Ella Alvarez (29.28s).
On Friday, Leah Chin (31.57s) and Carolyn Levy-Powell (32.03s) secured a one-two finish for Jamaica in the 50m backstroke. Bronze went to Luciana Victoria Tejada Vega of Peru in 32.49.
