Reggae Boyz draw 1-1 with Suriname
PARAMARIBO, Suriname — The Reggae Boyz gave up a first half lead and had to settle for a 1-1 draw against Suriname in their opening CONCACAF Nation’s League A group stage game in Paramaribo on Saturday.
Junior Flemmings had given the Jamaicans the lead after 39 minutes but an error by goalkeeper Amal Knight saw the home team equalise in the 84th minute.
Knight was a late addition to the starting team, replacing regular captain and goalkeeper Andre Blake.
It was a setback for the Jamaicans who were expected to win the game heading into Tuesday’s return leg in Kingston, as they prepare to meet Mexico later.
It was the first ever draw between the two teams in eight games as Jamaica leads the series with five wins, the most recent coming last year in the CONCACAF Gold Cup.
Despite not being at full strength, Jamaica dominated the game and were rewarded by a goal from Flemmings, scoring from a cross from Javain Brown.
Jamaica had a number of chances in the second half, wining a number of corners but failed to capitalise and paid the cost.
Knight failed to properly handle a cross and the ball fell from his gloves into the goal, to give Suriname the equaliser.
Leon Bailey should have scored late in stoppage time but with the goalkeeper at his mercy, fumbled the ball and allowed the Suriname defense to recover.
