DJ Lady Trey has reason to celebrate

CANADIAN-BASED producer and disc jockey Lady Trey says her first project, the Celebration Riddim EP, has reaped a lot of success since its debut in February.

“The Celebration Riddim is getting great feedback. DJs are spinning it worldwide — from USA, Nigeria and UK. People are enjoying it, the different tracks on the EP. The streams are growing so I am satisfied with the outcome thus far,” she told the Jamaica Observer.

Mixed and mastered by Kloudixmusik, the project was released under her own TreyCan Recordz in association with Demon Productions.

The dancehall compilation features six artistes — Don Mafia, So Vile, Gaps 7G, Wonaji, Zylan and Gyal Ediot.

DJ Lady Trey has been in the music business for the past four years. She utilises her international platform as the CEO of TreyCan Radio FM780, an online radio station in Edmonton, Canada, which pays homage to Jamaican music.

DJ Lady Trey, whose given name is Gavia Alonge, said she has encountered many challenges in the male-dominated industry but is determined to keep pursuing her passion.

“It can be very trying at times. Despite being an underdog, I remain strong and focused. I built my own platform and record label so I don’t have to deal with [any] egotistical man or woman for that matter. I can focus on my goals and dreams without the extra drama and stress dealing with being on someone else’s platform, radio station. I am consistent, professional and determined so TreyCanRadio FM780, TreyCan Recordz and all the other TreyCan rroductions that will come in the future will flourish because it all comes from a clean good place, my heart,” she said.

The self-taught producer said she likes an array of music, and this is what inspires her productions.

“I like artistes who sing with their soul, for example the late great Whitney Houston and Amy Whinehouse. I like music that has some substance to it. I like music that can make you feel better. I like music that has a message in it,” she said.

DJ Lady Trey has high hopes for the future.

“I see myself being more [knowledgeable] in the music industry as a business woman. I will be more experienced as a radio host and female DJ, music producer and artiste manager. I want to grow my fan base to more parts of the world. I want my platform to always remain an outlet to uplift and highlight the [up-and-coming] artistes of Jamaica,” she added.
