Atomica – a fourth Guineas winner for groom Errol Thomas
After watching his charge Atomica destroy rivals in the Jamaica 1000 Guineas on Saturday (June 4), groom Errol Thomas said that the chestnut filly has soared above all his expectations.
Bred by Karl Samuda, owned by Oakridge Farms, trained by Gary Subratie, and ridden by Dane Dawkins, the unbeaten Atomica won the 1000 Guineas by 20 lengths going one mile (1600m). The final time of 1:37.0 done by the Nuclear Wayne – Honkeytonkville offspring for the distance under a common canter was a new stakes record.
Atomica won ahead of Our Angel and Silent Mission.
Thomas, a former grooms’ president, said that Atomica has reached untold heights for him making her the best he has ever groomed.
“Well, I have Atomica as the best. I was talking about Wow Wow, saying that he was the best, but this horse [Atomica] has really stepped up, and I now have her as the best I have ever looked after. I have looked after Lady T, Wow Wow, Niphal, and now Atomica, that’s four Guineas winners for me. She won the 1000 Guineas by 20 lengths in a stakes record which pleased me, and even in The Portmore she ran a stakes record as well,” Thomas said.
Thomas said that Atomica came out of the 1000 Guineas in good order and its all systems go for the St Leger.
“She is a very versatile horse, she is quiet to deal with and she is very intelligent as well. I have her to go home with the Triple Crown, that’s how confident I am of her. She came out of the Guineas in good order, without even a scratch. She ate out and everything, and she will be ready when the St Leger comes along,” Thomas told The Supreme Racing Guide.
