$15 million to be invested in nurturing young cricket talent
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, Olivia Grange, has announced that the Government, through the Sports Development Foundation (SDF), will invest $15 million in 120 schools to spot and nurture talent for the national Cricket Incubator programme.
According to a release, the programme is geared towards unearthing a new generation of players.
Minister Grange said the initiative involves partnerships with the Jamaica Cricket Association, Institute of Sports (INSPORTS), the SDF, and the Ministry of Education and Youth. She also noted that under the partnership, students will be exposed to batting, bowling and catching during the first three years of primary school.
Thereafter, leading into high school, students will focus on other techniques and playing matches.
Grange, who was speaking during her contribution to the 2022/23 Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives on Wednesday, said INSPORTS is also expanding its summer camp this year with the introduction of ice hockey in collaboration with the Jamaica Ice Hockey Federation. She said the current programme has seen the recent introduction of chess, golf and surfing.
