PM Holness showing leadership
It was refreshing to see Prime Minister Andrew Holness showing true Caribbean leadership by standing up for countries who were not invited to President Biden’s Summit of the Americas — Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua. Here’s an excerpt from the PM’s statement to the Los Angeles Summit:
“The COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated our inter-connectedness and our inter-dependence and that no one is safe until we are all safe. This kind of inclusive approach is critical to meeting our challenges, and we regret that this summit did not involve all the countries of the Americas.”
It is true that he was not as forthright with President Trump but this is demonstrating that our PM is a pragmatist, given that one could not be sure how the president or those advising him would have reacted. Good show, PM.
Right decision on restoring Festival Song Competition
The Cabinet made the right decision in restoring the Jamaica Festival Song Competition as part of the calendar of events for our 60th anniversary, after Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport Olivia “Babsy” Grange had announced it was off because of poor quality of entries. I said my piece last week.
They may need to get new judges as those who rejected the previous entries can’t be expected to judge them a second time.
Rest in peace, Sarah Newland-Martin
I have had the opportunity to work at the YMCA under the leadership of Sarah Newland-Martin in the capacity of a secretary and can attest to what everyone has said since she passed, that she gave completely of herself. So good was she at her job that no one even thought of removing her as general secretary even after over three decades in the job. Rest in peace, Mrs Newland Martin. You have left Jamaica a better place.
