National Trials: Elaine leads women into 100m finals; Shelly opts out
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Defending World Champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce did not finish her 100m semi-final Friday at the national trials, having turned up fully clothed with no intention of running and won’t be in the final.
That race was won by Briana Williams in 10.99 ahead of Remono Burchell in 11.15. Fraser-Pryce won the gold medal in the Women’s 100m at the World Athletics Championships in Doha in 2019, which gives her automatic qualification to the event in Oregon this year.
In the meantime, Olympic champion Elaine Thompson-Herah stopped the clock at 10.91 in relaxed fashion in winning semi-final two ahead of Shericka Jackson in 10.98. Kemba Nelson of the University of Oregon also clocked 10.98 and will also feature in Friday’s final set for 8:40 pm.
Meanwhile, in the Under-20 category, Serena Cole of Edwin Allen was quickest in the girls 100m with 11.24. Alana Reid of Hydel High clocked 11.49 while the Clayton twins, Tina and Tia, eased to 11.54 and 11.56 respectively. Kerrica Hill of Hydel also looked good with 11.26. Brianna Lyston, who was listed in heat two, never turned up.
