Dangerous sounds from Freemynz
FRIENDS for 30 years, the singer/deejay duo of Shango Trex and Catapila officially formed Freemynz nine years ago. They have recorded sparingly, with the recently released Dangerous their third song.
Co-produced by Steven “Lenky” Marsden and Andre “GC” Fennell, the funky single came out on June 10. Following the release of Rise & Shine, their debut single, and a cover of Billy Ocean’s Caribbean Queen, they approached one of dancehall’s most successful producers to guide their latest project.
“Yes, we had a particular sound in mind and wanted someone who would enhance our idea, and Lenky was the perfect person, considering his ability to use his creative skills. So yes, we allowed Lenky to work his magic,” said Shango Trex.
A former member of the Bloodfire Posse, Marsden joined Sly and Robbie’s Taxi Gang in the late 1980s after leaving that group. He became an in-demand session player and in 2002 produced the Diwali ‘riddim’ which yielded a number of hit songs including Sean Paul’s Get Busy and No Letting Go by Wayne Wonder.
As a producer, Fennell has worked with several high-profile acts such as Shaggy, Stephen Marley, Enrique Iglesias, and Chris Brown.
Shango Trex (real name Dennis Llewellyn) is from Kingston while Catapila (David Nevin) hails from St Thomas. They first met during the early 1990s while playing in separate bands in Japan.
The former lived there for 10 years before relocating to New York in 2003, while Catapila still resides in Japan.
Side projects for other producers and living in different countries has prevented Freemynz from recording more songs. But Shango Trex says those are not the main reasons for their lack of material.
“We were meticulously working to perfect a particular sound and we had to be smart about who and what we were working with, and it took us a few years to get where we are right now,” he explained. “Now, it’s all about creating more records to compete with our present sound.”
