Naomi Campbell tearfully accepts honorary doctorate
She is now Dr Naomi Campbell.
Supermodel Naomi Campbell has received an honorary PhD for her contributions to the fashion industry from the University for the Creative Arts in England.
The 52-year-old supermodel shed tears of joy after accepting the honorary doctorate at the commencement ceremony held at the Royal Festival Hall in London on Thursday.
A trailblazer who has constantly broken boundaries for black women in fashion, Campbell used her speech to demand inclusion in the industry.
“Everyone should be equal, everyone is qualified,” the British supermodel, who has Jamaican roots, said.
In a sit-down interview with the BBC after the ceremony, Campbell spoke about the importance of what she said was holding the fashion industry accountable.
“You say you want to be inclusive, you say you want to be diverse, so let’s do it,” Campbell said, adding “I don’t want to hear anymore saying, I want to see the action.”
One of the most iconic models of all time, Campbell burst onto the scene in the late 1980s. She was one of the original supermodels in the early 1990s along with Cindy Crawford, Christy Turlington, Linda Evangelista and Kate Moss.
Campbell revealed last year that she had welcomed her first child at age 50.
