At least one person dead after two-bus crash in St Ann
ST ANN, Jamaica – At least one person has died from the two-bus collision on the Salem main road in St Ann on Sunday morning.
That’s according to Vice Chairman of the National Road Safety Council, (NRSC) Dr Lucien Jones.
Shortly after 9, a 30-seater coaster bus and a 15-seater Hiace mini-bus transporting passengers collided, leaving approximately 20 people severely injured.
Services of the Jamaica Fire Brigade and residents had to be rendered to aid victims.
The incident resulted in hours-long traffic pile up on the roadway.
Head of the St Ann Police, Senior Superintendent Dwight Powll said the drivers had to be cut from the vehicles.
In confirming the death of the woman, Jones again stressed the need for motorists to be careful while traversing the nation’s roadways.
“Again this crash underscores the need for people to be very careful on our roads to be very careful when you’re overtaking traffic and to be extremely careful when it’s raining. We are having far too many of these deaths in St Ann and all over the country,” he said.
He believes the new Road Traffic Act, when it is enforced, will reduce the number of accidents.
“Certainly when we have the Road Traffic Act enforced then some of these things will cut down but for the time being we just have to ask people to be extremely careful,” he added.
