Technical team established to deal with Cave Valley flooding in St Ann
Local Government Minister Desmond Mckenzie says a technical team has been organised to deal with flooding in Cave Valley, St Ann.
He made the disclosure while speaking at a Townhall meeting on Thursday evening in the parish.
Since last week, heavy rain has been lashing parts of the parish.
Mckenzie said the team will analyse how they can address the flooding situation.
“And everybody know the history of Cave Valley, Cave Valley was declared a disaster area decades ago. There have been signs of flooding in Cave Valley and we have put together a technical team, spoke to Minister Warmington on the matter that will look at how we can address the situation in Cave Valley,” the minister said.
In acknowledging that the situation cannot be remedied overnight, he said they will be putting in place measures that are available to alleviate the level of flooding that has been taking place in Cave Valley.
He noted that while on his tour he realized that several houses have been built on sinkholes.
He highlighted that this will create problems in instances of natural disasters.
While he called on residents to be aware of where they choose to build their houses, the minister encouraged the municipality to be vigilant regarding construction in certain areas.
“I want the Mayor and the municipality to become more vigilant, to go out there and to take the necessary actions against persons who continue to build in areas that are not suited for building. If we continue to allow these things to happen, meetings like these will be a waste of time,” he said.
The minister toured other communities such as Mount Moriah, Bingham Hill, Alexandria and more.
