Under-20 athletes ready to light up Cali
Jamaica’s Under-20 team had their second workout Friday afternoon after arriving in Cali, Colombia, for Monday’s start of the World Under-20 Athletics Championships to be held at Pascual Guerrero Olympic Stadium.
Despite having travel issues due to flight delays and cancellations that saw the team arrive in the South American country Thursday, a day after leaving Jamaica, reports are that the team is ready for the competition.
David Riley, the technical head of the team, told the Jamaica Observer earlier this week the pre-competition camp organised by the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) “achieved its objective in providing the athletes with facilities and an environment to continue their preparation going into the Championships”.
Riley added that “the athletes are in good shape and are ready to compete in Cali”.
He added: “The expectations are that we will do as good as, or better than, the Nairobi 2021 team. It is a strong team with participants across track and field events. We have a number of highly World U20 ranked athletes and we expect them to give their best.”
Fourteen medallists from Nairobi last year, led by women’s 100m champion Tina Clayton, return to this year’s team including all four women from the women’s 4x100m team that set a world record 42.58 seconds.
Men’s triple jump silver medallist Jaydon Hibbert, Brian Levell and Sandrey Davison of the men’s 4x100m relay team, Alliah Baker from the women’s 4x400m relay team, and Malachi Johnson from the mixed 4x400m relay team are also back in the hunt this year.
