Six Jamaican men on Thursday were sentenced to two and a half years in prison in The Bahamas for the cultivation of more than four acres of ganja in the country.

On Sunday, narcotics police reportedly arrested Leroy Douglas, Walford Reid, Jermaine Jones, Devon Simpson, Bruce Palmer, and Everton Palmer after conducting two days of surveillance on the farm in North Andros.

The men subsequently pleaded guilty to conspiracy to possess dangerous drugs with intent to supply, possession of dangerous drugs and cultivation of dangerous drugs in relation to the four-acre ganja farm that reportedly had 25,000 plants and 20,000 seedlings.

The ganja had a street value of US$2.5 million, police said.

Magistrate Samuel McKinney handed down concurrent sentences of two and a half years on each count to the men. Additionally, the convicted men, who had no legal representation in court, were given the option of paying a US$7,500 fine or spending an additional six months in prison.

The men also pleaded guilty to drug possession in relation to the seizure of four grams of ganja that police found while searching their home, and were each fined $250 or a month in prison.
