Expect a safe delivery from Brinks in ‘Fanna’ Griffiths Classic

Winston “Fanna” Griffiths, the man who has ridden the most winners overall (1,663) and also the most Classic winners at Caymanas Park, will once again be honoured with a trophy race.

The Winston “Fanna” Griffiths Classic, for native-bred three-year-olds non-winners of a Grade 1 race over 9 ½ furlongs (1900m) has attracted a field of eight runners.

The Supreme Racing Guide takes a close look at the runners and their chances of winning this contest which carries a total purse of $3.75 million.

1. PERFECT BREW: (3 b g by Bern Identity – Moonlight Brew) – Just about realising his true potential. Perfect Brew comes into this race on the backend of two consecutive victories. His last win was on August 20 when he ran down his stablemate Power Ranking over 7 ½ furlongs. Perfect Brew won in a time of 1:35.0. Perfect Brew should go well over this distance and will be in the hunt, especially with Shane Ellis riding for the first time.

2. D HEAD CORNERSTONE: (3 b c by Bern Identity – Soul Of The Heart) – Won well by 4 ¾ lengths in the one-mile Caymanas Park 1959 Trophy on August 21. Before that win, D Head Cornerstone made his credentials known with fourth-place finishes in both the Jamaica St Leger and Jamaica Derby Classic races. In both those Classic races, D Head Cornerstone finished well behind Brinks, who is present here and that doesn’t speak well for his chances. D Head Cornerstone is going to find a place on the board.

3. MORIMOTO: (3 b c by Casual Trick – Luckybegood) – Finished fifth in the recent Jamaica Derby Classic run on August 6 over 12 furlongs. Morimoto faces less competition except for Brinks and with the distance, not an issue, a better performance is anticipated.

4. PELICULA: (3 b f by Soul Warrior – Milestone) – Came home flying towards the end to finish third behind Our Angel and Sunset Silhoutte in the recent Jamaica Oaks. Pelicula should also enjoy this trip but against the boys, winning is going to be difficult.

5. GREAT TRICK: (3 b c by Casual Trick – Great Faith) – Upsets rivals at odds of 86-1, seven days ago. Great Trick is on the path of improvement but against these, his task of winning is difficult.

6. BRINKS: (3 b c by Bern Identity – Indian Bluff) – Brinks is the most successful runner among these coming out of the Triple Crown races. He finished second behind Blue Vinyl in the Jamaica 2000 Guineas, third behind Blue Vinyl and Atomica in the Jamaica St Leger and second behind Atomica in the Jamaica Derby. This distance is of no issue for Brinks, and with no Atomica or Blue Vinyl around, he is provided with his best opportunity of adding another tick to his win column. However, it has to be noted that after six starts as a three-year-old Brinks is yet to win.

7. SUNSET SILHOUTTE: (3 b f by Northern Giant – Ahwhofah) – Ran well to finish second in the recent Jamaica Oaks over 10 furlongs on July 2. Sunset Silhoutte will be hard-pressed to get close to her male counterparts.

8. UNRULY DUDE: (3 b c by Bern Identity – Wonder Girl) – Finished a game second behind D Head Cornerstone in the Caymanas Park 1959 Trophy on August 21. Unruly Dude should find two turns taxing.
