No foreseeable trouble for Calculus

No foreseeable trouble for Calculus

CALCULUS, from the stables of Gary Subratie, should have no problems in putting away rivals in the $1.14-million Kenneth Mattis OD Memorial Trophy, after taking a drop in class to contest the three year olds and upward Non-Restricted Overnight Allowance feature event at Caymanas Park today.

Bred by Sensational Slam out of the Bernardini mare Trinket Box, Calculus — last year’s Jamaica St Leger and Derby winner — is the accomplished horse in the line-up, and with nothing around of his calibre in the six-horse field the four-year-old bay colt should easily brush aside rivals.

Calculus has looked the part at exercise, having clocked 1:16.0 easy for six furlongs (1,200m) on September 4, his last spin coming into this race. He has raced seven times this season, holding two wins, three second-places and two third-place finishes. Calculus can either lead these or come from behind but whichever he chooses, he should be an easy winner. Shane Ellis remains in the saddle for third-consecutive time. Calculus will race with the visor off.

The interesting part of the race is the battle for second place, and anyone of the remaining five runners can fill that spot.

The nine-furlong, 25-yard (1,820-m) contest is positioned as the seventh event on the card of 10 races with a post time of 3:45 pm. First race is at 12:10 pm.

Trained by O’Neil Markland, Storm made the frame when stepping up on last to finish third by six and three-quarter lengths behind Artesia and Big Big Daddy over seven furlongs (1,400m) on August 28. This is Storm’s second race at this level after coming from the claiming ranks; he has no realistic chance of winning. Champion jockey Anthony Thomas replaces current leading rider Dane Dawkins in the saddle.

Awesome Treasure has been disappointing in her races for quite a while. The five-year-old American-bred mare, in this small field, however, should run her best race yet and can yet complete an exacta for her trainer Subratie, also the conditioner of Calculus. Dawkins will do riding honours here.

The Michael Marlowe-conditioned Marquesas has been hobbling around in this grade for a while without any clear indication that he can make it to the winners’ enclosure. Marquesas is suited to the distance of two turns, and in this weak field — with the exception of Calculus — has the hope of earning. Shane Richardson has the leg up. Marquesas will race without the visor.

Sir John has raced three times at this level without much impact. The Jason DaCosta trainee is going to be left behind. Christopher Mamdeen will continue to ride.

Chinamax is a very capable American-bred runner who shows up with surprising runs every now and then. In this small field Chinamax can definitely hit the board. Samantha Fletcher will ride for trainer Tensang Chung.

Neferatari, from the barn of Anthony Nunes, should return from a three-month break to beat rivals in Division Two of a Restricted Allowance II event for native-bred three-year-olds non-winners of two and imported three-year-olds (maidens) over six and a half furlongs (1,300m).

The three-year-old bay filly last raced in the 1000 Guineas (one mile) back in June, finishing in last position in the eight-horse field by over 30 lengths. However, Nefertari has been taken to task at exercise since, galloping five and a half furlongs (1,100m) in 1:08.0 with the last five furlongs (1,000m) coming in 1:01.0 on September 4. She then paced seven furlongs (1,400m) in 1:433 easily on September 8, showing her sharpness. With little to fear Nefertari is expected to return with a bang. Stablemate El Cid along with Thirtyonekiss and Awesome Prince should fight for minor placings.

Ones to watch:

Race 1 – Sir Puddington/Awesome Aviator/Mamasharondarlin

Race 2 – Lala Diva/City Counsel/Devonte’

Race 3 – Breaking Storm/Another Prosecutor/Fiery Path

Race 4 – Sniper Man/Step in Faith/Speechless

Race 5 – True Bravado/Oldkingcole/Cataba

Race 6 – Slamsilano/Wright in Flight/Hijo Primero

Race 7 – Calculus/Awesome Treasure/Chinamax

Race 8 – Ha Gow Siu Mei/Fly Messenger Fly/Shadowfax

Race 9 – Nefertari/Awesome Prince/El Cid

Race 10 – Tapitgood/Friendofthefamily/Jungle Boogie

Awesome Treasure.
Marquesas.
