Russ aims to ‘Buss’ in music production

SINCE leaving the Coppershot sound system last year, DJ Russ Buss has moved into music production.

His latest effort is Light with deejay Artikal, scheduled for release on Friday.

“Artikal is a good friend of mine and someone that I’ve previously worked with. The musical chemistry between us is effortless. We find melodies quite easily and write lyrics just as easily. We just build off of each other’s vibe,” said DJ Russ Buss in an interview with the Jamaica Observer on Tuesday.

The 24-year-old producer, whose real name is Russell Gordon, first worked with Artikal in 2019. The track, Grim, was featured on the No Sleep rhythm. Earlier this year, they collaborated again on Like You.

Prior to making his name at events and parties as a disc jock, DJ Russ Buss had always wanted to venture into music production.

“For me, it’s really heartwarming to see the effect music has on people. Music brings us together and serves as an escape for many so my love for producing is different because I’m able to impact people’s hearts and minds and that’s powerful,” the former Campion College student shared.

In 2017, Russ Buss finished second place in the SunCity High School DJ Competition.

“I started out as a DJ playing music at school events and birthday parties. After several years of experience, I decided to branch out into production, which was something I always dreamed of pursuing as well as being a DJ,” he said.

Russ Buss studied integrated marketing communications at the Caribbean Institute of Media and Communications (CARIMAC) at The University of the West Indies, Mona campus.

He has also worked with up-and-coming act Gapix (No Sleep). Along with former schoolmate Ronaldo Castanheiro, they co-produced New Gyal Alert by Quada, and worked on projects for Skorcha and Projexx.

“I have several projects working on for the rest of 2022 and beyond. I have a lot of records with different upcoming artistes that I’m excited about. I’ve been working closely with Projexx as well, who I DJ for. We are currently working on his second mixtape Fully Vol 2, which is his a follow-up to his first tape Fully that dropped last year. So many exciting things are on the horizon,” said Russ Buss.
