Win-streak hunt in daCosta Cup today

St Mary Technical in Zone J, Morant Bay High and Paul Bogle High in Zone L will all be going after a third-straight win today when the first round of the ISSA/WATA daCosta Cup football competition continues with nine games, all set to kick off at 3:30 pm.

Additionally, former winners Vere Technical and Titchfield High will go in search of back-to-back victories.

Manchester High won their second game yesterday, beating Bellefield High 3-1 in Zone F while Belair High blanked May Day High 6-0 and deCarteret College beat Mt St Joseph Catholic High 6-2.

Jamaul Lovelace and Kyode Clarke scored two goals each for Belair High while Alex Forbes and Fante Johnson had one each.

Jahiem Johnson and Douglas Whitely led deCarteret College with two goals each while Keeno Wright and Demetri Alexander added one each.

St Mary Technical, who won their first five games in the 2017 season, their best start in the competition, are coming off wins over Annotto Bay High and St Mary High and will face second-placed Tacky High who are also unbeaten but were held to a 2-2 draw by Wycliffe Martin High (formerly Brimmervale High) on Tuesday.

St Mary Technical have lost just once to Tacky High in their last eight meetings, a 1-2 reversal in the first round of the 2015 season and have not conceded a goal against them in their last six meetings.

Morant Bay High, who lead Zone L on goal-difference over Paul Bogle High, matched their best start in the last 11 seasons after they also won their first two games in the 2010 season and will hope to win a third straight as they did in 2018.

That year, they shared victories with Yallahs High, who they will face today and who are coming off a 5-0 whipping of Robert Lightbourne High on Tuesday.

Paul Bogle High will be poised to take over the lead if Morant Bay should slip up when they host Seaforth High, who were beaten on Tuesday after opening their campaign with a win.

Paul Bogle equalled their two-game winning start last year but have won their first four games in 2016, and their first five games the previous season.

Seaforth High, however, have not lost to Paul Bogle High in their last 11 meetings and the last time they lost came in the 2015 season and will hope to keep their good run going today.

Vere Technical opened their season on Tuesday with a 9-0 beating of Winston Jones High and will go after a second win today when they face Kemps Hill High in what should be a tougher game.

Kemps Hill led defending champions Garvey Maceo twice before they were held to a 2-2 draw last weekend and will be gunning to end their nine game winless streak against Vere Technical who won their game 3-0 last year.

Not only have Kemps Hill beaten Vere Technical just once since the 2015 season, they have also scored just two goals in their last 11 meetings.

Titchfield High will face Happy Grove High, against who they are unbeaten in their last seven meetings.

Titchfield High’s five goals in their game against Fair Prospect on Tuesday, matched their total from six games in the 2019 season, the last time they took part in the daCosta Cup competition.
