MORIMOTO, the promising galloper trained by Anthony Nunes is aiming for better results, having earned his fourth career win along with qualification for the Overnight Allowance grouping. That fourth win under sloppy underfoot conditions, was achieved at the three-year-old non-three level at a mile on Saturday, September 17, 2022, at Caymanas Park.

Morimoto with this fourth victory became the second horse from this year’s three-year-old cohort (native bred) to reach Overnight Allowance by going through the various conditions and not by virtue of winning one of the five Classic races. The first was the Carl Anderson-trained Emperorofthecats.

“Morimoto is slowly finding his way. He has made it to Overnight where he will be competitive once he stays healthy. He is still improving and the hope is that he will progress enough to have a look in when the major races like the Jamaica Cup and Mouttet Mile come around,” Nunes said in his post- race interview with the Supreme Racing Guide.

Morimoto, who finished fourth in the Jamaica 2000 Guineas, came close to winning one of the big ones when finishing second by three lengths behind Derby runner-up Brinks in the Winston Griffiths Classic run over 9½ furlongs earlier in the season.

Morimoto (Casual Trick – Luckybegood), ridden by Reyan Lewis, after sitting second most of the way behind Power Ranking (Dick Cardenas), found top gear in deep stretch and powered home to win the event by three lengths in an unfussed time of 1:40.1 seconds built on split fractions of 24.1 x 47.3 x 1:12.4. D Head Cornerstone (Anthony Thomas) finished in second place, three parts of a length ahead of Power Ranking in third.

“After his performance in the Winston Griffiths, we at the stables went into this encounter fully expecting a win by Morimoto. He duly obliged, with the task at hand now being to monitor his well-being and to get him ready to face more advanced opposition,” Nunes said.
