MORANT BAY, St Thomas — Members of the St Thomas Junior Council were invited to observe last Thursday’s meeting of the parish’s municipal corporation, part of their training to prepare for activities they will perform in November during Local Government Month.

The junior council is seen as the training ground for future leaders. This year’s members are drawn from Morant Bay, Robert Lightbourne, and Paul Bogle high schools.

“Courses are available… that will… help them fully understand governance and help boost their civic pride and responsibilities,” said Mayor Michael Hue (Jamaica Labour Party, Port Morant Division).

Students will vie for different positions such as mayor, deputy mayor, and councillors. The selected mayor will represent the parish as junior mayor at the national youth forum, in addition to meeting with the governor general, prime minister, opposition leader, and minister of local government.

“I am honoured to be a part of the council and I am anticipating the exposure it will allow me and also the knowledge and experience I am going to gain from it,” said young Danae Edwards.

Lorell Duncan was equally thrilled to be a part of the council.

“I look forward to the opportunity. I am elated to be a part of such a group and I look forward to working with the councillors and to see the progress of our developing parish,” she said.
