ROK Hotel The Soul Of Downtown Kingston

ROK Hotel The Soul Of Downtown Kingston

From its inception, the ROK Hotel was never intended to be a Jamaican resort; it was conceived as a place that would capture the soul of downtown Kingston. Music, arts, and food are the heroes and design-driving factors that determine the overall vibrance, colour, light and texture for the palette. Throughout every space, you’ll likely never experience the same thing twice. Each venue was designed with a unique concept as if each space was sub-leased by different operators thus creating an inherent uniqueness to each space.

The lobby grabs colour inspiration from the breathtaking sunsets that envelop the city at dusk. Through its distinctive pattern, the hombre chevron flooring guides you to the glazed ceramic vibrant yellow-tiled reception pods. By hand-placing every single tile, we were able to create a fusion of hues that mimic the sunset, beginning with lighter, subdued beige tones towards the point of entry and more saturated browns and yellow as you approach the sun or in our case the reception pods. Wood slat clad columns create a frame around the double height space which features Laura Facey’s Me with a Box on My Head sculpture and an architectural black metal plastered staircase that guides guests from the lobby to the pool deck, a place where the music of downtown Kingston literally takes centre stage.

The ROK is conceived as an extension of downtown Kingston, designed around the soul of downtown. It is an urban and fresh culturally inspired hotel that is meant to bring light to everything Kingston is and has the potential to become.

The ROK Hotel was designed as a microcosm of downtown Kingston, where seemingly different colours and textures that make up the city join in harmony to create a lively experience in a beautiful, unexpected way. The lobby is the first indication of this concept where the contrast in materiality hints at the stark contrast occurring throughout the hotel. (Photo: Fusion Media)

To add a soulful and authentic artistic layer to the lobby, accessories were sourced from local antique stores by art curator Jessica Jones. (Photo: Fusion Media)
The dark plastered stairs and wood cladded columns frame the double height mezzanine space in an architectural way which allow the stairs to feel like an art sculpture guiding guests from the vivid ground level to a more muted and serious mezzanine. (Photo: Fusion Media)

The ROK’s urban café is characterised by a multiplicity of textures; a sensory space with sharp contrasting materials brings the energy of the bustling city into the interior of the ROK Hotel. The composition of the space ultimately guides the eye to the unique mural envisioned by local artist Kianne Hutchinson. (Photo: Fusion Media)

Intended to be booked for extended stays, the suites have a natural palette that is complemented by warm tones of wood and bold pops of black. (Photo: Fusion Media)
Inspired by the vibrant Jamaican sunset, the bathroom strives to capture that moment in time as expressed by the tonality in the tiles that encompass the space. The bright yellow gives a sharp contrast to the inherent neutrality of the bedroom, catching the attention of the guest as would the sun at dusk. (Photo: Fusion Media)
Black and white print by Kianne Hutchinson evokes the spirit of downtown Kingston within the neutrally designed meeting rooms. (Photo: Fusion Media)
The breakout space adjacent to the hotel meeting rooms features an original mixed media piece by local artist Ty Pessoa. (Photo: Fusion Media)
The vibrant custom carpet pattern within the theatre brings downtown energy into a multifunctional space that can be rented out for private events. (Photo: Fusion Media)
Herringbone flooring with royal blue and beige panelled walls create a simple yet moody shell which allows Natasha Cunningham’s portraits and the yellow accent on the Moroso Mathilda chairs to really pop and catch patrons’ attention as they first enter the space. (Photo: Fusion Media)
Burgundy and teal throughout the furniture create a cohesive and branded palette, allowing for a seamless transition from bar to poolside. (Photo: Fusion Media)
The pool at the ROK can be compared to no other in downtown, Kingston located on a vast wood deck that is anchored by the ROKstone Bar and Grill on one end and a large stage to house local artistes on the other. (Photo: Fusion Media)
