Dinthill, Edwin Allen square off at Drax Hall
DRAX HALL, St Ann — Dinthill Technical and Edwin Allen High will face off today at Drax Hall in St Ann as the quarter-finals of the ISSA/Digicel daCosta Cup football competition gets underway with four games.
In addition to Dinthill Technical, two other former winners — Clarendon College who are unbeaten all season and Frome Technical — as well as last season’s losing finalists Manning’s School, Manchester High, William Knibb Memorial and Central High have survived to continue their hunt for major titles this season.
Clarendon College will take on surprise package Central High at Foga Road, Frome Technical meet Manchester High at Brooks Park, while Manning’s School and William Knibb will square off at Llandilo Sports Grounds.
The Drax Hall clash will be a repeat of last season when Dinthill Technical edged Edwin Allen High 1-0 on their way to the semi-finals, while Edwin Allen went on to win the Ben Francis KO, their first-ever football title.
Both schools rebounded from losing their opening games in the round of 16, Dinthill Technical winning back-to-back games and Edwin Allen taking four points, including an upset 2-0 win over highly rated Glenmuir High on Saturday to extend their title chases.
Dinthill Technical were impressive in their wins over Paul Bogle High and William Knibb by a 5-0 aggregate after losing 2-1 to Cornwall College, snapping their season long-winning run.
Edwin Allen first came from behind to earn a draw against St Elizabeth Technical before upsetting Glenmuir who only needed a draw to advance and cannot be overlooked.
Central defender Kimolar Fearon has come up big for Edwin Allen in their last two games, scoring important goals, but Dinthill Technical will have a number of players who they can depend on to get goals, including Giovannie Afflick, Daniel Roberts and Makhaya McKoy.
Clarendon College have been on a rampage and if their 3-0 win over Frome Technical is anything to go by, Central High, who have accounted for some big scalps this season, will be in for a long afternoon.
Saturday’s loss was Frome Technical’s first of the season and while they had already secured their place in the final eight before the kick-off, Clarendon College were never troubled all afternoon.
Today, however, they will expect Devonti Hodges, Malachi Douglas and Christopher Hull to lead their attack, but they must be weary of a Central High team that has not backed down and have only lost twice this season, both times in the first round.
Central High have had good results this season, beating outgoing champions Garvey Maceo in the previous round as well as ending Irwin High’s season in the second round after the St James school were unbeaten in 10 games.
Manning’s School are the other unbeaten outfit left in the competition and will face a wounded William Knibb Memorial team coming off a battering from Dinthill Technical.
Manning’s are hoping to be able to get back to the final after faltering at that stage last season and is expected to take the fight to William Knibb from the start.
After a good start, William Knibb’s offence has sputtered of late with just three goals in their last fives games since the end of the first round and their dependence on striker Mark Lewis is by now predictable.
Frome Technical will be hoping to rebound from Saturday’s humbling loss to Clarendon College, but will face Manchester High who seem to be getting better as the competition goes on and have done just enough to move on to the next round.
Frome Technical will be banking on Stevaughn Spence, Akeem Kangol and Dwayne Watt to carry the fight to Manchester.
