Manning’s, Manchester cruise into semis
LLANDILO, Westmoreland — Manning’s School and Manchester High are the first qualifiers for the semi-finals of the ISSA/Digicel daCosta Cup competition after emphatic wins over Frome Technical and William Knibb Memorial, respectively, in quarter-finals games on Saturday.
Manning’s School hammered Frome Technical 6-1 in the Westmoreland derby at Llandilo Sports Complex, while Manchester High were 3-1 winners over William Knibb Memorial at St Elizabeth Technical Sports Complex as both winner rushed to six points in Group B, setting up a winner-take-all meeting at STETHS on Tuesday.
Both winners also booked their spots in the first round of the ISSA All-Island KO and it will be consecutive qualification to the semi-finals for Manning’s School, while Manchester High return to the top four for the first time since the 2015 season.
Frome Technical and William Knibb Memorial were losing their third games in a row after they had been unbeaten all season up to the final set of games in the round of 16, and both will drop to the Ben Francis KO after Tuesday’s games.
In other games on the rain-affected day, Clarendon College also made it two wins from two starts in the quarter-finals, beating Edwin Allen 2-0 at Brooks Park and Dinthill Technical kept their semi-final hopes alive with a 3-1 win over Central High at Foga Road.
Manning’s School were ruthless in the second half on Saturday, scoring five times after Frome Technical had tied up the scores at 1-1 just before half-time.
Rushawn Graham led the way with a hat-trick, Shamar Hamilton bagged a brace, while an own goal accounted for the other goal in their biggest margin of victory since the end of the first round.
Manchester High, who had lost 1-0 in extra time to Dinthill in 2015 semis, ran out 3-1 winners in the game that saw the half-time break extended because of heavy rains and a flooded field at STETHS.
Shaquiel Campbell gave Manchester High the lead in the 17th minute when he converted a free kick and Adrian Campbell doubled the advantage in the 53rd minute.
Jhaeem Bryan, who came on in the second half, put the game out of reach of William Knibb when he scored the third in the 71st minute.
Mark Lewis, who came off the bench, got William Knibb’s consolation from the penalty spot in time added.
At Brooks Park, Khaiem Dixon and Marques Reid scored to put Clarendon College on the brink of their seventh-consecutive semi-final and a point against Dinthill Technical on Tuesday would be sufficient.

Dinthill Technical took the lead in the ninth minute from an own goal, but Shane Gordon equalised for Central High in the 23rd minute.
