Fireworks forecast as three teams gun for two semi-final spots
SANTA CRUZ, St Elizabeth — Fireworks are expected today as three teams will be chasing two places in the semi-finals of the ISSA/Digicel daCosta Cup competition as the quarter-finals come to an end with four games.
Among the matches is the fixture between Clarendon College and Dinthill Technical at the St Elizabeth Technical Sports Complex in Santa Cruz.
Clarendon College lead Group A with six points after winning the previous two games, while Dinthill Technical and Edwin Allen, who plays Central High, are chasing the spots.
Dinthill Technical and Edwin Allen are on three points each.
Manning’s School and Manchester High have already booked both spots from Group B and will meet at STETHS in the first game of a double-header to decide the winner.
Both Manning’s and Manchester High are both on six points after winning their first two games of the quarter-final round and have also booked their places in the ISSA All-island Knock-out as well.
In one other game, Frome Technical and William Knibb will meet at Jarrett Park in a game of academic interest as after losing both their first two games will contest the Ben Francis KO, which starts on Thursday.
Today Dinthill Technical, who have failed to make it to the semi-finals only once in the last seven seasons, must beat Clarendon College to get to the final four, while Edwin Allen also need to rebound from their loss to Clarendon College on Saturday when they meet Central High who have lost both games in the quarter-final round so far.
Clarendon College have been on cruise control, scoring 25 goals and conceding just two, while Dinthill Technical have lost twice in that span and have lost their cloak of invincibility that took them to 12-straight victories before they were beaten in the quarter-finals by Cornwall College.
A draw would be enough to see Clarendon College through to the semi-finals, Edwin Allen could be the big winners as a win over Central High would see them through.
The Tafari Burton-coached Edwin Allen have battled to get within a win of their first-ever daCosta Cup final, a year after they won the Ben Francis KO, their first-ever football title.
They got out of the round of 16 despite losing to Manning’s School in their opening game and then beat Dinthill in the quarter-finals to set up their chances, but were undone by Clarendon College on Saturday.
Manning’s School and Manchester High will have their battle as the runners-up will most likely face Clarendon College in the semi-finals and Manning’s, who lead on goal-difference, can top the group with a draw.
The Everton Tomlinson-coached team has proved they can win without Jhamaleek Porter scoring as they won their last two games without any scoring contribution from their leading marksman.
Manchester High are in the semi-finals for the first time since 2015 and are coming off a win over William Knibb Memorial on Saturday as Manning’s hammered Frome Technical 6-1.
