Mahogany well-furnished to shine in Mouttet Mile
Trainer Ian Parsard says his charges Mahogany and Jordon Reign’s are more than capable of winning the Mouttet Mile.
The one-mile (1,600m) Mouttet Mile (invitational) carries a total purse of US$125,000, making it the largest purse for a single event offered in the English-speaking Caribbean.
Both Mahogany and Jordon Reign’s last raced in the Gold Cup over 7 furlongs (1,400m) on October 22, 2022. Mahogany was a 3-length winner in a time of 1:25.3, while Jordon Reign’s ended in fourth – seven lengths behind his stablemate.
“In the Gold Cup, I thought both of them did very well. Mahogany, of course, was outstanding in the as he avoided all the traffic problems; he carried the weight, and I think he did an outstanding job.
“Jordon Reign’s was unfortunate; he got a bad hit by Atomica at about the 5-furlong marker, almost hitting through the rails, and he still managed to run fourth in that race after that,” Parsard stated.
Parsard said that both Mahogany and Jordon Reign’s are training well for the race, and he expects both to put in a good shift.
“Mahogany, first of all, his training has been flawless. He has not put a foot wrong as everything has gone just perfect with Mahogany. Jordon Reign’s has a lot more challenges, so we have been very diligent with him.
“My son Peter-John is in charge of looking after Jordon Reign’s. Peter-John has had his hands full getting him ready for this particular race,” Parsard said.
When asked where his loyalty lies, Parsard was very guarded in his response.
As to which horse he prefers Parsard said: “My loyalty lies with both of them. There is nothing more satisfying to me as a trainer than looking at the horses perform on race day, and you can say, ‘Yes’, they put their foot down and ran their races. Win, lose, or draw, once they run a good race I feel satisfied, and, of course, everybody loves the ecstatic feeling of winning, and that is what we all are competing for, but for me, there is nothing better than to see them putting their foot down and running a good race, and that is what I am expecting both of them to do come Saturday.” he said.
