WATCH: Fire destroys barber shop in Black River
ST ELIZABETH, Jamaica — Fire destroyed a wooden building on North Street in Black River, St Elizabeth on Tuesday morning.
The building, which is located in the vicinity of the Black River police station, was engulfed in flames shortly after 6:00 am.
A unit from the Black River fire station responded to the blaze.
The building is said to have housed a barber shop.
Floyd Green, member of parliament for St Elizabeth South Western, told OBSERVER ONLINE that this is a massive loss for those who occupied the building.
He added that, fortunately, the fire did not spread to neighbouring buildings.
“This is a very big blow to the business owner and the community. We are happy there was no loss of life… The fire brigade responded quickly,” he said.
“Right around that building is a series of board, old historic buildings, so this could have been much worse, but it is a massive loss for the owner and occupiers of the building,” Green added.
