Dovey Magnum set to Sting
DOVEY Magnum is excited to pen her own chapter at the end of year at Sting, recognised as the “Greatest one night reggae-dancehall show”. It is scheduled for Plantation Cove in Priory, St Ann, on Boxing Day.
“Sting is a show where you can showcase your talent and show your strengths vocally and enjoy yourself on stage, too — and it’s good. Sting is a show that is the heart and soul of show business in Jamaica. Sting is very much a show that is part of dancehall history and it had to come back, regardless,” Dovey Magnum said.
The singjay said that the show had the capacity to build and break artistes, or to put an artiste on the scene initially.
“Now, more than ever, Sting is a show that can showcase upcoming artistes as most promoters only book established acts; and the old people dem fi low we too make we rise, and enjoy and support us too. This is a different era. The music change, and it’s going to change again in the future, so this is the current state of evolution. This is our Sting to shine,” she said.
Sting’s line-up includes Skeng, Jahshii, Christopher Martin, Etana, Shane O, Kraff, and Jada Kingdom.
First staged in 1984, Sting has been held at Cinema II in New Kingston, the National Stadium in St Andrew, and JamWorld Entertainment Complex in St Catherine. Hip hop heavyweights such as Biggie Smalls, Kris Kross, Busta Rhymes, and DMX have all appeared on the show which drew monster crowds in its heyday.
The famous Sting clashes include Super Cat and Ninja Man in 1990; Merciless vs Ninja Man, Bounty Killer and Beenie Man in 2000; and, Vybz Kartel vs Ninja Man in 2003.
Dovey Magnum said she plans to do a 10-minute “sexylicious” set with songs such as Sex Slave, Sex is Lovely, Bawl Out, and Harkive.
“The fans can come out and hear dem favourite Dovey song, the best nine or 10 out of the catalogue,” she said.
Magnum, whose real name is Simsky Kimberly Hamilton, released a new single called Betrayal last week with touching visuals.
Born in Spanish Town, Magnum is best known for Bawl Out (2017) and Location (2020).
