Samantha J is back
IN 2013, teenaged singer Samantha J was the toast of the music scene when she scored a massive hit with Tight Skirt.
The chart-topping single saw her winning the Youth View Award for Favourite Breakout Celebrity while earning nominations in several other award shows.
Now nine years later, the St Ann-based double platinum-selling artiste is ready to reinforce her presence on the music scene with the single Push Ya Luck.
Push Ya Luck, produced by Anka Music of Anka Music Group in California, was released in June.
“Push Ya Luck is about making it known that I’m not someone who can just be walked over. I’m no pushover. The lyrics ‘big bad eagle cover me, try don’t push ya luck’ speaks for itself. I’m guided and protected so no evil cast upon me shall prosper. This is a song that many people can relate to. It’s known that bad-minded people will pray for your downfall but just stay prayed up and protected. It’s all self-empowerment,” Samantha J told the Jamaica Observer.
Samantha J is encouraged by the response to the song. Its video has so far racked up more than 1.7 million views on YouTube.
Since her absence from the local music scene, Samantha J has released music in Europe. She also became a mom.
“It’s known that I am now a mom to my son whose name is Trillion. So, the first two years of his life took up most of my time of course, but there has also been a balance. I’ve been in and out of the studio a lot, creating music and writing. There’s been a lot of behind-the-scenes work going on, plotting and planning for releases and working on what’s to come,” she said.
Some of the music that she released include Bad Like Yuh, Baby Love featuring R City, League of My Own featuring Dej Loaf, Picture featuring Gyptian, and the collaboration Light it Up with twin Norwegian brothers Marcus and Martinus.
Light it Up was a number one hit in Norway, while making charts in Sweden, Finland and Poland. It has been certified double platinum in Norway by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (Norway) for sales exceeding 120,000 units.
Samantha J says she is working on an EP but in the meantime is releasing singles leading up to the release of that project.
She shared how she balances being a mom while juggling her music career.
“Balancing motherhood and my career has been quite a journey so far but I can say that I love it! I’ve become more aware of time management and honestly my son comes almost everywhere with me. Interviews, late night studio sessions, you name it. He’s such a blessing to my life.
