Jamaica’s Toshami Calvin misses semi-final round of Miss Universe competition
Miss Universe Jamaica, Toshami Calvin, missed out on becoming the first Jamaican delegate to be crowned Miss Universe, having failed to advance to the semi-finals of the coveted competition in New Orleans on Saturday.
Calvin, who is a St Thomas native, quickly became a local favourite, having channelled Jamaica’s national heroine, Nanny of the Maroons, and for her presentations in the prelims of the swimsuit and evening gown sections on Thursday.
But judging was based on closed-door interviews and the preliminary competition held Thursday (Manila time), which featured the contestants in swimsuit, evening gown and national costume. As a result, Calvin did not advance to the top 16.
Caribbean delegates that have made it to the semi-final round include Miss Puerto Rico Ashley Cariño, Miss Haiti Mideline Phelizor, Miss Dominican Republic Andreína Martínez, Miss Trinidad and Tobago Tya Jané Ramey and Miss Curaçao Gabriëla Dos Santos.
