Arsenal versus Man United a defining EPL clash

Arsenal versus Man United a defining EPL clash

Four Premier League giants will be in action this weekend. Firstly, two of the season’s big underachievers, Liverpool and Chelsea, will clash at Anfield, then on Sunday, the two in-form English Premier League (EPL) teams, leaders Arsenal and the rejuvenated Red Devils Manchester United, will meet in a super Sunday showdown.

Event # 1 – EPL – Liverpool vs Chelsea – 7:30 am

Liverpool and and Chelsea have been extremely disappointing so far, especially on their travels, losing five times, each away from home in the league. With that said, Liverpool have lost their last two away league matches in some worrying displays, losing 3-1 to Brentford and then they were embarrassed 0-3 away to Brighton in a game that Liverpool’s coach said was the worst during his tenure at Anfield. However, Liverpool defeated Wolves 1-0 in midweek in their FA Cup replay with a much-changed team, which should lift spirits ahead of this crucial showdown. At home, Liverpool have been excellent, securing 20 points from a possible 24 on offer.

Chelsea, meanwhile, enter this game off the back of losing six of their last eight matches but did just enough to defeat Crystal Palace 1-0 at home to head to Anfield in high spirits. Indeed, Chelsea will arrive at Anfield with new £88.5-million signing Mykhailo Mudryk, hoping to be handed his debut. With that said, matches between these two giants have always been keenly contested as the last four head-to-head meetings ended in draws, with two cup finals going to penalties and the other two being league clashes.

KEY STATS

• Liverpool – have lost both of their league games in 2023 so far, going down 3-1 at Brentford and 3-0 at Brighton. They’ve not lost their first three league matches in a calendar year since 1953.

• Chelsea – have won just two of their last 10 Premier League games (D3 L5), though they did beat Crystal Palace 1-0 last time out. Away from home, the Blues are winless in five Premier League games (D2 L3), their longest run since September to December 2015 (7).

• Both sides – Liverpool have lost just two of their last 15 Premier League matches against Chelsea (W6 D7), although one of those was at Anfield in March 2021. The two league games between Liverpool and Chelsea last season were both drawn; this fixture has never been drawn in three consecutive league meetings.

Event # 2 EPL – Arsenal vs Manchester United – 11:30 am

Arsenal host Manchester United in what could be a season-defining clash for both teams at the Emirates on Sunday. Arsenal sit comfortably atop the Premier League table; eight points clear of the defending champions Manchester City after Manchester United handed them a 2-1 defeat in the Manchester Derby last weekend.

The silky and impressive Gunners, Arsenal, also brushed aside Tottenham 2-0 in another dominant display the same day. Arsenal have lost just once so far this season and that loss was against Manchester United. If Arsenal were to lose to Manchester United for the second time, the Red Devils would find themselves just six points behind the leaders and would be well in the title race.

Manchester United have won five consecutive league matches on the trot and only conceded twice during this impressive run, so this clash will be a stern test of Arsenal’s title credentials. United head into this match sitting third in the table, just one point behind second-placed Manchester City and could leapfrog their neighbours with a win, providing City fail to win their match against Wolves at home.

Man United’s striker Marcus Rashford have been lighting up the league with goals, scoring eight goals so far, while Arsenal are yet to concede a goal in 2023. There are only three calendar years where Arsenal have not conceded in any of their first four competitive matches, doing so in 1935, 1994, and 2021. Indeed, this match is sure to be a thrilling one, with both teams looking to secure a vital victory. It’s a must-see for all football fans, and they can expect a high-intensity affair with plenty of action from both in-form teams.

KEY STATS

• Arsenal – this is just the third time Arsenal are hosting Manchester United in a Premier League match while top of the table, with the previous two meetings ending in draws – 1-1 in March 2004 and 2-2 in November 2007. Arsenal have scored in 17 of their 18 Premier League games this season, though the exception was their last home game in the competition (0-0 vs Newcastle). They’ve not failed to score in consecutive league matches at the Emirates Stadium since November 2020.

• Manchester United – are looking to complete only their second league double over Arsenal since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013, doing so since then only in 2017-18 under José Mourinho. Manchester United won 3-1 against Arsenal in September, with the Gunners top of the table. The only side they’ve beaten twice in the same Premier League campaign when the opponent was top both times is Newcastle United in 1995-96.

• Both sides – have won five of their last seven home Premier League matches against Manchester United (D1 L1), winning 3-1 at the Emirates last season.
