Gospel lovers will have the opportunity to participate in the Reggae Month celebrations, courtesy of the Jamaica Reggae Industry Association (JaRIA), with Reggae Praise on February 22.

“Since it’s the beginning of Easter, we have to drop in God in everything we do, so we give the Christians a chance to come on out and worship,” marketing director of JaRIA June Isaacs told the Jamaica Observer.

The line-up has not been confirmed. However, it will be held at the Festival Marketplace in downtown Kingston.

February 22 is the beginning of Lent in Christianity. It is a solemn reminder of human mortality and the need for reconciliation with God and marks the beginning of the penitential Lenten season. It is commonly observed with ashes and fasting.

Isaacs noted that Reggae Praise is usually well attended.

“The last one that was held at Emancipation Park, we had a full house,” she said.

In previous years Lubert Levy, Rondell Positive, Rhoda Isabella, Kevin Downswell, and Levy Heritage have performed.

Reggae Month started in 2008 when the Government announced February as the month in which the music is celebrated. Additionally, the month features birthdays of two prolific artistes — Dennis Brown, lauded as the crown prince of Reggae (February 1), and reggae king Bob Marley (February 6).
