The Road Traffic Act which took effect on Tuesday has sharply increased the penalties for several offences. Here are some more of the penalties and the fines:

17) A motorist who is guilty of careless driving causing a collision will face a fine of $25,000.

18) Careless driving where no collision occurs carries a fine of $11,000.

19) A drivers who, without the consent of a constable or other duly authorised person, drives a vehicle (which is not an emergency vehicle) over any hose of the Jamaica Fire Brigade, when such hose is laid on a road for use at a fire, will face a fine of $10,000.

20) Smoking ganja while driving or attempting to drive or while being in charge of a vehicle on a road carries a fine of $10,000.

21) Stopping or parking a non-emergency vehicle at a point within three metres of either side of a fire hydrant without consent of a police constable, or the superintendent, or an officer of the Jamaica Fire Brigade carries a fine of $5,000.

22) Failing to observe ‘Stop for Crossing’ when required by a school crossing warden will attract a fine of $12,000.

23) Using a motor vehicle to damage a road sign will attract a fine of $50,000.

24) Failure of a driver or operator of vehicle to yield the right of way to an emergency vehicle will attract a fine 0f $25,000.

25) A motorist who fails to give a turning signal (failing to indicate) will attract a fine of $2,500.

26) The fraudulent use of a registration plate or decal carries a fine of $10,000.

27) Failing to produce a driver’s licence/permit at the request of a police constable will attract a fine of $2,000.
