Nervz makes case for Garvey
Nervz believes the Government needs to move swiftly to introduce the teachings of National Hero Marcus Garvey in Jamaica’s school curriculum.
“We need to know the truth and more about our great Marcus Garvey in schools. We need this history to change the mindset of our people because teaching Garvey’s philosophies can impact the minds of students, and help them to become decent citizens,” said the artiste, whose real name is Michael Atkinson.
Nervz’s favourite Marcus Garvey quote is: “If you have no confidence in self, you are twice defeated in the race of life.”
Marcus Mosiah Garvey was a Jamaican political activist, publisher, journalist, entrepreneur, and orator. Born in St Ann’s Bay, he was the founder and first president-general of the Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League (UNIA-ACL, commonly known as UNIA), through which he declared himself provisional president of Africa. He died in 1940.
Garvey was posthumously awarded National Hero status in Jamaica in 1969.
Nervz believes that the current global climate is favourable for promoting Black History.
“Yes, the youths affi know the roots. We are a nation of greatness, let’s remain that way and regain the pride, and dignity of being Jamaican,” he said.
Nervz is presently promoting Heart of a Lion for which he released visuals on February 1.
“Heart of a Lion is based on my journey right now. I’ve been receiving numerous amounts of ‘fight’ from family, friends, and haters. It drives me as motivation to go harder. Dem fraid a greatness; a me a di definition a champion. Every ghetto yute can be great, a just belief,” he said.
Over the past year, Nervz has built up a decent underground following for his popular songs such as Brawling, Chappa Fi True, Polo for Days, and Banga Tone. He has consistently released music on various digital platforms through a series of popular mixtapes such as Street College, Banga Tone, and Brawling.
Born in Kingston, Nervz grew up in St Catherine and, since his days at Willowdene High in St Catherine, has been an avid music lover.
