FORMER five-time champion jockey Trevor “Slicer” Simpson ensured there were no surprises in Sunday’s feature as he produced a perfect ride aboard favourite Positive ID to win the three-year-old Non-Restricted Overnight Allowance contest over nine and a half furlongs (1,900m) at Caymanas Park.

Simpson, who is no stranger to riding the Michael Marlowe trainee, knew the late-kicking five-year-old horse would require some early encouragement to get into his running, and the veteran jockey provided just that.

After leaving the gates slowly, Simpson gave Positive ID a few reminders to play catch up as the fleet-footed Billy Whizz (Robert Halledeen) dictated terms, with Power (Tevin Foster) and Press Conference (Jerome Innis) for company, as they left the clubhouse turn and entered the backstretch.

The leading pack basically remained the same for most of the way until they left the five-furlong mark, which was when Simpson brought the full-of-running Positive ID into contention, taking aim at Billy Whizz.

By the time they left the three-furlong point and approached the home stretch, Positive ID was in full flight, straightened ahead of the field, and went about his business from there.

He won by four lengths ahead of Press Conference, Billy Whizz and D Head Cornerstone (Anthony Thomas).

The final time was 2:05.1 and the splits were 26.0, 51.4, 1:16.3 and 1:43.0.

Meanwhile, apprentice Shavon Townsend topped all riders with two winners, including the Dale Murphy-trained Ridge Liner in the supporting Mercury Sprint feature. Townsend had earlier won the second aboard Genelogy for trainee Keffin Murray.

Both Murray and Murphy shared top trainer honours with Patrick Lynch.

Murphy’s other winner was Chitu Prince in the sixth event ridden by Christopher Mamdeen while Murray’s second came in the curtain-call event when KP Choice topped the field with Andre Powell aboard.

Lynch’s winners Legal Bomb (Jordan Barrett) and Curlin’s Flight (Javaniel Patterson) were in the fourth and fifth events, respectively.
