Shaquena Foote wins first AOW award
Former national representatives Shaquena Foote, Owayne Owens, and Kelly-Ann Beckford were named Athletes of the Week for their respective conferences after outstanding performances in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) indoor track and field events last weekend.
Foote, the former Petersfield High School runner, was named Mountain West female track Athlete of the Week for the first time after back-to-back wins in the women’s 400m.
The San Diego State runner won the women’s 400m at the Washington State Open with a time of 54.37 seconds after she had run a Mountain West leading 53.78 at the same venue a week earlier.
She was also third in the women’s 60m in 7.47 seconds, the fourth-fastest mark in the Conference this season.
Owens, of the University of Virginia and the reigning Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) men’s indoor and outdoor triple jump champion, was named the men’s field events Athlete of the Week after he set a personal best 16.63m to win the event at the Doc Hale Meet hosted by Virginia Tech.
His mark is joint second best ever at Virginia and is third in the NCAA so far this season.
Beckford, formerly of Albert Town High School, was named the American Athletics Conference Women’s Track Athlete of the Week after the University of Houston senior broke a 23-year-old Houston record in the 800m at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic, running 2:05.04 seconds.
Her time is the top mark in the American Athletic Conference (AAC) this season and is the 22nd fastest time in NCAA Division I as of February 6.
