Cavalier, Arnett in mouth-watering JPL showdown

TOP teams Cavalier SC and Arnett Gardens will clash in the marquee match of the Jamaica Premier League but all eyes will be glued to Mount Pleasant striker Trivante Stewart to see if he can continue his remarkable goalscoring form.

Cavalier and Arnett will do battle at 5:30 pm in the second game of a double-header at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex, after Waterhouse and Molynes United meet at 3:00 pm.

There will also be a double-header at the Wespow Park in St James as at 1:00 pm Faulkland FC take on Mount Pleasant, then Montego Bay United will play Portmore United at 3:15 pm. Harbour View and Chapelton FC play at Ashenhiem Stadium at 3:00 pm.

On Monday, also at Ashenhiem Stadium, Tivoli Gardens will play Vere United at 5:00 pm and Dunbeholden FC will tackle Humble Lions at 7:30 pm.

Cavalier are sitting in second spot on 26 points — just two ahead of Arnett Gardens in third on 24 points — but more importantly, both are trying desperately to stay in touch with leaders Mount Pleasant on 30 points.

Both Cavalier and Arnett have won three of their last five games and are in pretty good form so this should be another intriguing encounter.

In their first encounter of the season Arnett Gardens scored a dramatic 2-1 win with basically the last kick of the game, thus another close, hard-fought encounter is expected.

The usually slick-moving Cavalier seem to have deviated a bit and are more direct, going to striker Collin Anderson more quickly. That might not be Coach Rudolph Speid’s plan but Anderson has become the talisman of that team with 10 goals so, naturally, the players are looking for him at every opportunity.

But Cavalier are far from a one-man team, and in Dwayne “Busy” Atkinson they have a tricky and lethal player who can win a game on his own. He has five goals to his name.

Arnett Gardens also depend a lot on their veteran striker Fabian Reid who is sitting on six goals and is expected to lead the line once again. But they have found another game-winner in Shai Smith, formerly of Holy Trinity High and Portmore United, who has found the clincher in their last two games.

With their morale-boosting win over arch-rivals Tivoli Gardens last week, Arnett Gardens are tipped to get the better of Cavalier.

Meanwhile, leaders Mount Pleasant face the struggling Faulkland FC in 13th spot on just six points.

The Theodore Whitmore-coached Mount Pleasant have won nine of their 13 games and are on a roll, winning eight of their last 10 games on the back of the in form Stewart who leads the goalscoring chart with 13 goals.

Stewart scored the winner against Humble Lions when his team were down to 10 men, and last week he netted a hat-trick in Mount Pleasant’s 3-0 win over Dunbeholden.

Mount Pleasant scored a 2-1 win over Faulkland on the opening day and should win more convincingly this time around.

Eight-place Portmore United on 17 points will be hoping to break into the top six when they tackle a Montego Bay United outfit in 10th spot on 16 points, and are looking to leapfrog them. Both teams played to a 1-1 draw in the first encounter.

Former champions Waterhouse FC, in seventh spot on 18 points, take on 12th-place Molynes United on 12 points, and the Drewsland-based squad will be looking to rev up their season.

Waterhouse have won just five times this season as goals have been scarce, netting onnly 10 times from 13 games. Molynes, on the other hand, have scored more but also have conceded a whopping 20 times, hence their lowly position. Molynes United will be looking to overturn their 1-2 defeat in their first encounter.

In the fifth game on Sunday, embattled Chapelton Maroons sitting at the bottom of the table on three points will have their hands full containing a Harbour View team in fifth spot on 19 points.

Harbour View, who had won four of their first five games, have won just once in their last eight games and are struggling of late. They have lost their last two games and are looking to turn things around —and what better opponent to do it against than the bottom-placed team.
